jdhUSA this might help, it says we were never actually number 1 http://www.good.is/posts/debunking-education-myths-america-s-never-been-number-one-in-math

However, since that is just a blog and not a very good reference you could check at the PISA site http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pisa/

The problem here is that even though these kinds of tests have been going on for decades they weren't published online. So older results may need to be looked up in reference books. Also these types of ratings are different for every subject, like math, science, literacy etc. I am not sure if there is a generalized score provided by everyone to test overall education level.

I know this is not an exact answer, I am sorry

We are 14th in the world, behind countries like China, Germany, North Korea, and I forget the rest.
The new thing now is lawmakers are planning on eliminating summer vacation in favor of year round schools, there are about 2000 such schools already!

I'm sure our teachers union is going to love that. Most teachers like having the summer off.

Feds can't plan any of that. However there are a bunch of year round schools already and some people, including teachers love going to school for 9 weeks and then having 3 off plus Christmas break

But I love summer vacation. It's an American tradition!

I Spose if you had lots of time off you could then make it up by school going all year round

I think it started happening in the 1950s/60s. Students grades started dropping dramatically in this period. So, to try to cover this up, they dumbed down the test so the students would score higher. We still aren't as good as we used to be, and it doesn't seem like it will get better anytime soon.

Impossible to say. In fact, you can't *fairly* claim the US ever had the best education system.

Studies that compared the education systems of different countries (e.g. PISA) only began around the early 1990s. The US has never ranked highly.

Prior to these studies being started you can't really take any country's claims of being the “best” in education all that seriously as there's no proof one way or the other.

Because we're more concerned with entertainment, ourselves, pleasure, and the easy way out.
