Ford explorer 2005 heavy smoking at the cold start for 2-3 seconds

Black smoke is oil burning white smoke is coolant burning. Could be a bad head gasket.

Heavy smoking at the cold start of your Ford Explorer can be as a result of problem with the coolant reservoir or a malfunction in the PCV valve. You should try checking if there is any leaking in the reservoir and make the necessary replacement. Consult a mechanic for more help.

Have a mechanic pressure test the cooling system.
He will pump 14 lb pressure on it and you can see if it leaks.
The gauge will go down.
You might be seeing normal water vapor in the exhaust.

Probably due to oil burning off that has migrated down the cylinder wall onto the piston where it pools.
