What water heater is best to buy that won't unlight easily?

I have a AO Smith Promax for 5 years now it unlited a week ago and now it won't stay lit, I'm planning to replace it. Which brand/type would be a better buy?

the thermocouple is probably dirty or needs replaced. The thermocouple is what tells the gas valve that it is ok to allow the gas to come out. Dirty t-couples can cause it to stay lit for 1 cycle and shut off. A t-couple can cost 25$ or less

That's because you live in the shadow of TNVA, and the Nuker which they own. Electric is very high with JCP&L.
Incidentally; The TNVA crews were a god sent in the aftermath of Sandy. They had the largest presence of the electric companies which came to our rescue.

Too bad. A water heater should last a minimum of ten years. I had a Rheem 40 gal which came with the house. It was 14 years old, but superstorm Sandy submerged it destroying the burner. I had it replaced with a Whirlpool 40 gal. It boasts of a 12 year warranty/guarantee. Good luck and send AO Smith Promax a nastygram about their flimsy product.

A 5 year old AO Smith should still have a good 10 years of life left in it. There are many youtube videos showing how to replace a thermocouple or burner assembly which is the most likely culprit for a non lighting water heater. Contact the manufacturer for the correct part number and replace it yourself for around $35 compared to over $300 for a new tank. If you are bent on replacing the heater anyway go with a brand that has a resettable thermocouple. I believe Whirlpool has one.
