Take it outside after it eats, every time it starts smelling around all over and as soon as it wakes up. Give it a treat very time it potties outside and make a big deal out of telling it good boy/girl. If it potties inside don't discipline it at all cause its your fault. I did this and potty trained my dog in 4 days. Yes I used to be a rub their nose in it and swat them person but I did some research and now you know what I learned.
What worked for me was "puppy pads". You can get them at any pet store/ pet area of a store. Keep a super watchful eye on the puppy and when it's time for him/her to go, get them to go on the puppy pad. It's like a disposable towel. Keep moving the pad closer and closer to the door, eventually the puppy will "get it" and start going outside.
After the puppy eats, take him out. Immediately after eating, take him out. If he starts sniffing, take him out. Every hour or so, take him out. Every time you think of it, take him out. Every time you take him out, take him to the same place and give him your potty command. We used the phrase "hurry up". Once he potties, praise him lavishly. If he potties in the house do not punish him. No nose rubbing or hitting or yelling. If you actually catch him in the act tell him no firmly then take him outside to his potty place, give him the command, and then praise. Patience.
I do all of the above. You can also train them to go on newspaper inside so if they are an inside dog & you are at work then they can go on the newspaper. But once house trained they don't like doing it on the paper unless they have no other option. this where a doggy door comes in handy also. they can take themselves outside whenever they need to go. you never smack them or rub their nose in it. if you took them out it wouldn't happen so if you want to rub anyone's nose in it rub your own.
