What is the best dog for my 9 yr. old boy, 10 yr. old girl and 11 yr. old boy?

Considering the range and ages of your children I would suggest you take them to an Animal Shelter and let them interact with a few of their choice, they and the Dog will find each other! Never fails! That way also they've had direct input into the choice and are even more likely to actually help care for it, and they get the added benefit of knowing they saved a worthy Dog!:-)

How much time is going to be spent exercising the dog? If the dog is going to get an hour or more of exercise a day a boxer is a great family dog. They are fun and loving and gentle when they need to be.

If you are okay with big dogs then a doberman I guess or Great Dane.
Medium dogs a Red and white Border Collie or a Siberian Husky with baby blue eyes.
A small dog a Shih Tzu or chiwowow.
Your choice but those are my suggestions.

But if you wont excersize the dog much and if your kids are going to carry it around the house I suggest a small dog..

Any other thoughts on your thoughts?

And A border Collie doesnt need a bath if you take it to the beach to fetch sticks in the water everyday because they love to swim. If your not even willing to do that I dont suggest getting a dog but atleast get a small dog nothing bigger.
Shih Tzus and chiwowows are also considered lap dogs but they arent they to need excersize.
Also I would suggest a male as females are typically harder to train even with the simple tricks like sit.

People are also (not all) scared of dobermans as if they are not trained can be really dangerous and are scared of great danes because they are so big so keep that in mind.
Also i suggest you talk to the kids about it because if its a dog they want they will be more likely to help around taking care of it and being joyful around it.

Good luck.

Shitzu!! Very easy to handle! They never bark! They are super sweet, and cuddly. They are very smart also. But if you are gonna get a dog you should probably get a dog from a breeder... They are more concerned about dogs then getting a random dog from the pet store.

Do you want an active dog? A lap dog? A protector? A small dog? A big dog? Are you willing to get a mutt and save a life? How much time do you want to spend with training? Are you okay with barking? I'd recommend contacting a local animal alliance or shelter. We adopted my dog from a foster home, where he had been living for months even though he is fun an playful, people didn't like him because he is part pit. He is the friendliest, most tolerant dog in the world now, and he is only 1and a half. However he does get 2 or 3 walks a day and has training school every few days. It all depends on what you are looking for. The animal alliance will be able to suggest a dog they have that may fit what you are looking for. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE rescue! Thanks, enjoy the new pet! also, NEVER get a dog from a pet store! they will probably have at least kennel cough, and other sicknesses. if you must not rescue, at least go to a reputable breeder!

Please Rescue. If you want a specific breed, there are rescues for every breed. Ask yourself what you're looking for in a companion dog. How much time are you going to invest?

For big dogs I would suggest a German Longhair Pointer or a Labrador Retriever. For small dogs a Cocker Spaniel, a Yorkie Terrier, or a Beagle. Get a shelter dog. Take the kids and let them play with their favorites. You will save a dogs live and make your life so much better! DO NOT get one from a pet store or from a street vendor most likely they come from puppy mills. They have terrible sicknesses.

since the kids are old enough to know what you should and shouldnt do to a dog and can help care for it, i think many dogs will be great. P;ease check an animal shelter/rescue first though. There are such great dogs there waiting for homes. The dog will find you guys :)
