Cancer can result from a cell that becomes abnormal. Say, you have chronic bladder infections for years and don't get treated right away. O er 10-20years, the cells can morph into full blown cancer. They use the term Dysplasia for suspicious abnormal cells. I have had Dysplasia diagnoses after a pelvic exam and I've had to go in as outpatient to get these cells scraped off the walls. if I did not have these annual exams, I know I would eventually get cervical cancer.
Cancer is a cell mutation that allows cells to grow uncontrollably rather than as they should. They replace functioning cells, say in your liver, until the organ can't function any more. Any chemical or radiation that will cause cell mutation can cause cancer. Cigarettes cause lung cancer because cells in your lungs mutate and grow until your lungs aren't really lungs any more.
