Why does copper turn green?

o-o The lady of liberty is green, she is made of copper but WHY is she GREEN???????

Report as

Copper turns green after many years of exposure to the elements, this is called oxidation and bearing no resemblance to rust this oxidation does not eat away at the metal it actually helps to protect it.

Oh that makes alot of sense... what elements?
Report as
When we speak of elements we are referring to weather related forces such as acid run which turns the copper green over time.

The green is just the color of what copper turns when it rusts.

The green is caused by oxidation, the same as the brown rust on steel.

Copper oxidizes, and when it oxidizes it turns green. It's as simple as that.

Ah, think of it as copper's oxidation rusting.

Now the green stuff can be cleaned off using special cleaners/sanders, it isn't permanent.
Don't think that.

As the name suggests oxidation is brought on by . . . oxygen.

Which means, the statue of liberty being outside all the time in the weather would get a oxidized a LOT faster than it would be if it were oiled down and buried in plastic.

Hope it helps

The green patina that covers copper is oxidation. It's caused by a chemical reaction between the copper and oxygen in the air.
