no joke it is to keep your eyes in their sockets
It is a very common reflex in most people. While there are a few people who can keep their eyes open, it is very difficult.

We close our eyes when we sneeze because when we sneeze triggers go off inside our nose or something like that and cause air pressure on eyes, therefore we shut them do our eyes from extruding
