Poke is used to send an alert to someone that they need your attention. It is just like telling someone 'you have been quiet' on them. A stranger can poke to indicate that he/she has noticed you and would like to know you and this should be replied with a poke if the reply is 'yes.'

Well, I know I am in poke wars with some people..Other people just randomly poke me and I don't respond for like EVER. I just think it's there to annoy people, honestly;)

Its just another useless feature, which tries to make you to think it's meant for fun, so that you will stick to the site even when you get bored of it.
