My mom had shingles years ago & has similar pain in same area but no rash. Can she have shingles without the characteristic rash?

Yes. And once she's a carrier, she'll alway have it. Tell her to get a shingles vaccine. Even though she has it, it will minimize the duration and the amount of pain.

She could have shingles without the rash. Check the other symptoms to make sure. It could be a recurring illness or it could even be all in her head O_O!

It is possible to experience shingles pain without ever developing the rash. Your mom needs to make an appointment with her doctor and have some tests run to get the right diagnosis. This strain of shingles is actually difficult to diagnose.

It's called post herpatic pain, caused by the Shingles Virus! It can last for a long time, have her see her Doctor, there are drugs that can help
