Why do Christians wear crucifixes? If Jesus comes back do you really think he'll EVER want to see one again?

and yes this is from the late great Bill Hicks but I'm curious as to the answers.

"If" he comes back I'm sure he will see it as that HE had a lasting impact on what he did....probably see that people do remember him after all these loooong years. I'm also sure he will facepalm after he finds out how careless and thoughtless most are.

I think it's CATHOLICS that wear crucifixes. In the churches I've been to, a crucifix wouldn't be worn, because we believe that Jesus is no longer ON the cross - He gained victory over that (and death) and rose again. So we celebrate the cross because of what it accomplished for us (or rather what Jesus accomplished ON IT for us), but we worship Jesus.

Thank you JD, you get it.
Report as
The cross, to me, represents all that my Saviour did for me - paying for my sins in a horrible way (by taking the terrible punishment I DESERVED), and dying for me so I could be reunited with God. It symbolizes EVERYTHING that is good to me. So it's not stupid - and it's not "just" jewelry. It STANDS for something.
A rifle could stand for something, too - I know. But not for something nearly as important.
Report as
You know, the cross also is a very good opening evangelical tool. If someone's wearing a cross, you can comment on how pretty it is and then ask if they're a Christian...
Report as
Sexy I get you, I just don't think you (maybe?) understand exactly what that cross meant. That's all I'm saying.
I love the cross. And He HAD to go to it for us to have eternal life. Peter said "let's take up our arms" to fight for Christs life. Jesus said "stand behind me Satan" because that WAS Satan talking, trying to keep Him from the cross. The cross represents death defeated!

Was. Past tense.
Genius, pure genius, has always bordered on insanity. Bill was quite sane, and very right about many things.
Go look up what he had to say about music and teen music, just replace the names with modern ones (like one direction) and it still holds true.
BTW- you do know his father was a preacher/minister and he was raised with the church. He showed his parents every bit of his material and they never thought he was insane. In fact one of his specials is called "Sane Man".
You used present tense so that tells me you don't know squat about Bill and his brand of comedy.

The ones who go to church the most are THE biggest sinners of all...that's why they go so much, because they KNOW they're going to hell.

Alright so your agnostic that's always a good sign... Lemme ask you some questions then if you don't mind...do you believe that God is good/just
Report as
I believe everything happens as it should. I believe we cannot have love, joy, and peace without also having hate, sorrow, and war.
I believe NO ONE is a purely good person, I believe everyone has just as much bad in them as good. I believe if you don't in some way show thanks for what you have, you will slowly lose all that you have. I believe that if you don't show kindness to animals you're an evil being. I believe Lilith was the first woman in creation not Eve. I believe in every form of Karma and I believe black cats to be lucky. I also believe in magic. I've performed household spells and I've seen blood magic with results. Oh, and that everything you SAY comes back to you, if you're verbally negative and insulting it invites negativity into your life. That one I know too well, my birth mother RADIATES negative energy and I have to work hard to not absorb it.

Of course. ALL religions have the same basic ones, be good to your fellow man, show kindness to animals, that sort of thing.
Everyone says treat others how you want to be treated...I've always had a hard time with that, I tend to treat people the way they deserve. Because of that some people strongly dislike me and some people think it's inspiring how I call people out on their bull spit. My philosophy on that is if you're gonna be a jerk, that's how I'm going to treat you. If you try and push your religious beliefs on me I'll get pushy right back but I'll add a dash of snarcasm. That's snarky sarcasm.

I'm just saying that either way, if you think about other things that might have killed him, wearing how would it be wearing those (if he died that way) any less insensitive than wearing a cross? My point is, you shouldn't have to wear a cross to remember how he died for you. and If you really do need something to look at and say "oh yeah! I almost forgot! this guy died for me!" than you probably have a lot more issues with god than you think.

Good point lonejoe. I made a similar one in my answer. When I started typing my answer there was only one other answer by the time I posted it there were a bunch. My answer was kind of long and I'm a slow typist.

It wasn't really about WHAT KILLED HIM. He gave up His own life. They didn't TAKE His life. It's about what the cross represents (or the guillotine, if that was how He died, for instance). It represents the fact that He died for me. That's it.

I think Christians wear it as a symbol of their faith and to remind them of the sacrifice Jesus/God made to save them. And if Jesus comes back, I don't think he would really care. I think there are more pressing matters to worry about than whether someone is wearing or not wearing a cross.

Helpful (4) Fun Thanks for voting Comments (17)
Report as
I think he would care...it's the equivalent to wearing a rifle pendant when meeting JFK's family.
Report as
He's God. Plus Christians believe he sacrificed himself on purpose and died like that for the world so it's a symbol of that love and sacrifice. Also, if I haven't mentioned it before he's God. I would like to believe a perfect being would be able to move beyond that.
Report as
I'm talking about Jesus NOT God, and you just described a martyr.
Report as
Christians believe Jesus and God are the same and different beings. And yes, he would be considered a martyr. Christians like to quote something like John 3:16 regarding the whole Jesus dying on the cross and why he did it. If you're not Christian, then this probably won't make all that much sense to you.
Report as
John 3:16 was more for him coming into the world but that's fine;) haha
Report as
And yes jesus is God
Report as
I think it's an explanation why Jesus was sent to die on the cross and endure what he did. He was dying for mankind's sins and giving everyone the opportunity to be saved. I think something like that changes the meaning of the death and the cross. I could be wrong, it has been a while since I studied all this stuff.
Report as
And I think all of you are over interpreting my question to suit you. I know ALL about symbolism and your Christian church.
My point is DO YOU REALLY THINK HE'D WANT TO EVER LOOK AT A CROSS?!
Just as my question says, so stop trying to reinterpret it.
Report as
Because it was painful and he died on the cross? I guess using that logic, why would a mother ever want to see her child since it could remind her of the very painful and traumatic experience of childbirth.
Report as
You're comparing the pain of childbirth to that of a crucifixion?! That's stretching things a bit...and actually some mothers do. It's called post pardum depression.
Report as
And those mothers that don't have a problem...I guess those are the weird ones wanting that reminder around. I haven't been through either, but I imagine both are high on the pain scale. But if there was a good reason to endure a lot of pain, like to bring salvation to the world or to give birth, I wouldn't see it as a bad thing. Clearly, we disagree on the idea that a symbol of the pain a person has to endure can be more than just a reminder of the pain to that person.
Report as
ALL women go through PPD. You've never given birth so you don't know.
If you need to wear a special piece of jewelry to remember your beliefs you have problems.
Report as
There's nothing wrong with a reminder like having a picture of a deceased grandparent. Who does that hurt? But hey, if you don't care or you're too good for those things, that's your prerogative. I don't think it's necessary to point it out, much like pointing out to a person in a wheelchair they need it to get around while you can walk.
Report as
Do you wear a picture of deceased relatives around your neck to remember them? No you don't.
I stand by what I said, if you need to wear a special piece of jewelry to remind you of your faith then you don't have true faith. If you truly had faith in your heart you wouldn't need a mental talisman because your faith would be unwavering. I know plenty of Christians who believe the same and don't need to wear a cross to remind them they have Christ in their hearts.
It's a material possession, true faith is not.
Comparing it to a person who is physically handicapped is completely off base, you have no physical need to wear jewelry. So your argument from that point is invalid.
Report as
You mean a locket with their picture in it? Does that count?

The analogy is valid. Others might need reminders of their faith just like others need a wheelchair or cane to get around. Does that mean those who don't need reminders of their faith are better people? Does it matter that a Christian might use a reminder to keep them from sinning? It has been years since I've been to church but I could have sworn Jesus came for the sinners and not those who were already perfect.
Report as
Alright, have it your way...religion is a crutch. That's the validity of your argument. If it's needed like a wheelchair or leg braces, then it's a crutch.

I believe some claim because it reminds them of what Jesus went though for them. But if your a Christian He should be in your heart and you should be transformed by the renewing of your mind. So if Jesus is truly with you then you don't need a reminder. My Jesus conquered the cross and the grave and has risen. He's the Risen King. I'm in agreement with MarSch. God Bless!

Boy, ya'll just don't GET it, do you? You wonder why we talk about it, sometimes even PUSH it (as you ASSUMED I do to my son). I've been on the receiving end of someone trying to convince me of something, and it's not fun.

But this is what ya'll (meaning atheists, or others) don't understand... If my son does NOT receive Jesus, then when he dies, he will live eternally in hell. I LOVE him and I do NOT want that to happen at all! It is VERY important to ALL Christians that the ones they love (especially) come to know God.

I haven't "pushed" Jesus on him for years. Don't even mention it unless he brings it up. A few years ago, I told him if he'll sit and listen with an open mind, I'll tell him everything he needs to know (about getting saved, and God loving him, etc.), and how to ask Jesus into his heart, then I would not keep bringing it up... We did it in Shoney's. He knows how (when he hits bottom), now, and I pray he'll take the step. (he's an alcoholic/druggie.)

So in other words you don't believe in the power of God. I was addicted to pot up to the age of 30 and when I got Saved and filled with the Holy spirit I didn't need no worldly program I was totally delivered by the power of the Holy Spirit. When I say delivered I mean miracliously delivered. I never desired it anymore, never craved it anymore and I was never tempted to even think about going back to smoking it. And the reason I know that I was set free from it is becuse I loved getting high and at that time had no desire to quit for anyone. That was 30 years ago. I don't need no worldly program all I need is the Holy Spirit anf God and Jesus. I was also healed of stage 4 cancer.
Report as
You do realize that it's medically proven you can't get addicted to pot...maybe mentally, but not in the true sense of the word.
No I had real addiction problems, meth and acid. I ended up in a meeting completely by accident and after 3 months stopped going because they're mostly whiners.
To me conformed religion is an opiate for the masses. I have never needed a placebo.

Report as
Once again, Sedai, you ASSUME. I am a recovering alcoholic - sober for 24 years (as compared to your 15 years). Instead of continuing to tell me you know it all, please realize that sometimes, once in a great while, maybe even once in a blue moon, you just might be wrong, or might assume incorrectly.

James, I totally believe that Jesus delivered you. He also delivered me. I was sober for 4 years after He delivered me. I didn't know anything about addiction, and I got back into drinking. After a year I was back flat on my face (and I was a leader in the church!). This time the Lord healed me, but in a different way. I did all the right/same things, but He did not take it all away. This time I had to do it the hard way. I couldn't get the help in church, because "if I just believed enough, He would heal me. Or maybe there was some other sin in my life." So my spiritual mentor took me to AA. That's where I got sober. Extremely hard, and grueling process, but I did find out that sometimes He delivers us, but sometimes it's a process and not instantaneous...
Report as
By the way, while in AA, several people looked to me for guidance, and one got saved, and two others decided to return to churchl THAT's why, I think, I had to go thru that. The church is not perfect, and I HATED having to go to a secular meeting - felt SO out of place - but look how God used it... He is goodl
Report as
Sedia - yeah, I guess I will have to learn more about addiction. That'll really help my son, instead of encouraging him to find God to help him (andpraying fervently).

Sorry Sedai. My healing did not come though medical technology You just assumed that out of your own logical thinking. I was prayed for and miracliously healed. I'm truly sorry you fon't believe in the power of God though the Holy Spirit.

Mar I'm truly glad that it worked out that way for you. And I truly believe God did put you there for that short period of time in order to bring that person to the Lord. Praise Jesus! But I also know that the things they teach 90% or more never truly come to know God it's just a secular way of getting people to overcome their addictions as long as they continue to go to the meeting.

Big boys don't like their Mama telling them anything, even tho' I've been thru it, and warned him of all the alkies we have had in the family. Laying your sins at the cross is the only way to have a chance to live with the father of grace, love, passion, compassion, and creation, and the son who shed his blood for our sins and concord death three day later, for the rest of eternity.

1 Peter 2:24

Kinda like wearing a necklace of an electric chair around a group of those sentenced to death... Well... jesus wasn't the only one killed on a cross (if he even was)... Just remember you all are also worshipping what was used to kill murderers, thieves rapists, and some innocent... But... Wearing a cross is one of those things people have done for so long that they just don't think about it anymore... To me it symbolizes revenge and sometimes justice... The killing of scum... Jesus will have to say something about it if he is traumatized... Or send some kind of message...... Or has he?...

That it means nothing an they just wear it to show thy are a so called "christian"...

It means Satan LOST!! We have eternal life when we ask Him into our life. He loves us so much He did this willingly, knowing full well how He would suffer. We win, Satan loses.

You never met god and Satan personally... You blindly choose a side... I'm assuming you were taught little about the forms of satanism and only christianity... Like everyone else...

EXCELLENT ANSWER!!! Bill Hicks would be proud.

Who is Bill Hicks?...

He was a stand up comedian, but his brand of comedy was like that of Lenny Bruce and modern day Lewis Black.
Look him up, find his stuff, open your mind, and listen.

He died in 94 but his material still holds true.

Good question. I'm a Christian and I never wear a cross or a crucifix. Or display one in my house or car. I think they are gruesome. It's a depiction of a murder weapon. It signifies the moment that the Devil thought he had won (boy was he in for a surprise!). If Christ had been killed by a firing squad do you suppose they would wear little toy rifles around their necks? I think that the people who do wear or display crosses and crucifixes do do to commemorate the sacrifice that he made. That he submitted willingly to an ignoble and horrific death that he didn't deserve. I think it would be better to commemorate his victory. That he was raised from the dead and at that moment the Devil knew he had lost. The Devil wants to remember the death, his moment of glory. Christians should remember he is risen. Maybe an empty tomb would be a better symbol.
On a side note: Jesus Christ didn't look anything like the wimpy guy they show hanging on the cross. He was a tough guy and he was beaten mercilessly so that he was barely recognizable as a human being.

Sorry, Satan LOST when Christ died on that cross. Why do you think He told Peter "stand behind me Satan" when Peter wanted to fight for Him? That Jesus on the cross meant death defeated. God bless!

I can respect that

YOU JD understand the comparison to wearing a rifle pendant when meeting JFK's family.
Anyone familiar with Bill Hicks knows I should have said cross instead of crucifix. They're the same thing to me.

Suzie: Satan did lose when he murdered Jesus Christ but he didn't know it yet. He found out when God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now all he can do is try to convince people that it didn't happen or keep Christians ignorant of the significance of what happened.

He's doing a pretty good job of it too I hate to say.

Many people wear the cross or crucifix as a fashion piece without concern for its symbolism or a desire to represent Christ. But that should not mean Christians can't or shouldn't wear them. Many Christians wear crosses as a proud expression of their love, respect, and service to Christ, along with a remembrance of what He did for us.
It is not for any of us to judge whether wearing a cross is proper or not; every Christian has to seek God's approval in all he does. If it is not clearly outlined in Scripture whether a practice is lawful or edifying, then the practice is one better left to each person's conscience.Read more: http://www.gotquestions.org/Christian-jewelry.html#ixzz2M2diBLLl

I wear a cross. When I hear crucifix I think of a cross with a little Jesus mold form on it... The cross I a reminder to us for what he did on the cross, he great and matchless love for us all, think of it as a ring of sorts.. I don't do it for "religion" I do it to keep me in check and remember what Christ did for me on that great day

I agree. I dont wear one, but I think most people wear them because it symbolizes Christ dying for our sins. Its all about the meaning behind the cross.

I like the ones that are just the plain cross because of curse the point is that JESUS is no longer in the cross though he lives!!!!

Me too. Mine is tiny. I think some people think the bigger the cross the more the faith haha!

That's better than the ones with him still hanging on it. Those depict the moment that the Devil would like to remember. When he thought he had won.
I still think that if people want to wear something around their neck they should consider an empty tomb with the stone rolled away. Rub his nose in it. I know people who wear a depiction of a Dove representing the Holy Spirit made available for every believer to have permanently in them on that day of Pentecost when they received it and from then on.
Report as
Yes I see your point. He is no longer on the cross.
Report as
I like your ideas! But how would a stone look? Could be an interesting way to talk about him.
Report as
And JD, Satan did not want Christ to get to that cross!
Report as
We disagree on that Suzie. Satan wanted to kill the Messiah. Peter and others thought of Jesus as a political messiah. They didn't see the greater spiritual significance of what he was doing until later.
Report as
The devil thought he one tht day but he later found out that he terribly terribly lost...

It is a remembrance for what He has done for us. I have one but I don't wear one.
