Cat with small grey bump under her skin, the size of a BB. What is it and what to do?!

I befriended a cat that lives nearby. Today she came over covered in blood. I don't know if she got in a fight or just killed and ate something. After I cleaned her up I noticed a small light grey bump under her skin the size of a BB. I was able to roll it around under the skin a bit. There seemed to be no hole or wound near the area. I'm relatively sure it wasn't there a few days ago. I am disabled and can't drive nor do I have money for a vet. I don't want to take her to a shelter in case she might belong to someone. What could this be? Is there something I can do to help her? She doesn't seem to be bothered by it, she's eating fine and she seems okay. At first I thought it -was- a BB but there is no wound near by. Will she be okay? Please only answer if you know what I can do. Simply saying "take her to a vet" is not what I'm looking for. I'll watch her for a few days and if it gets bad I'll take her to a shelter if I have to. However, if there's something I can do for her or if it will resolve itself I'd rather know now so I don't worry myself sick. Please help!

The bump felt under the cat's skin could be due to growth of tissue. These lumps under cat's skin are called nodules and they are caused by infections and injuries. The bumps can also be due to malignant, cyst or benign.

It could be a sebaceous cyst. If you look closely at the mass, maybe even wet the hair with a little water so you can see the skin better, you might see a darker nodule under the skin that will probably confirm if its a cyst or not. It can also be some other type of mass, benign or cancerous. A vet visit would be needed to examine it further. They might be able to aspirate some cells and look at it under the microscope or even surgically remove it and send it off for examination. But there are numerous masses that cats can have. I'd ask around and try and contact the owner to give them further information.

I will ask my neighbors if they know anything about who she belongs to. I assumed she's an outdoor cat of someone nearby. If I can find the owner I will point it out to them and ask them to have her checked. If I can find nothing about this cat's owner I will try to find a way to get her a shelter of some kind. My friend's father is a vet, but he wont be in town for a few months. I'd rather let him take a look than end up dropping someone's cat off at a shelter (if she does belong to someone). But I also don't want to wait too long and have the cat hurt. :/ I guess if I can't find any information about who she belongs to I'll have to take her to the shelter in a few days. :( How sad, she's such a nice kitty and I'll miss her visits.

I'm sorry. I hope, in the end, the cat will be safe and healthy :)

I find it odd that you'd keep the animal, can't take care of it properly, and worry that it might belong to someone. That's the part that worries me the most. If say, this cat was yours, and became lost, would YOU not want it returned? Call the ASPCA, surrender the cat, and do the right thing for this poor animal.

Like I said, she's just a cat that has been around for a long time and I eventually befriended. I'm not -keeping- her in anyway. I cannot even have cats at my place. I simply cleaned her up to be helpful and I noticed this lump. I would -never- keep someone's lost pet or adopt an animal that I couldn't take care of. I didn't do either of those things. >.> If you read what I wrote, I stated clearly that she's just a friendly cat that lives nearby that I hang out with sometimes and I'm worried about this lump I found. Since I don't know -who- her owner is, I cannot be sure how she's being taken care of. However, if I'm worrying for nothing that would be good to know and I wouldn't want to take her to a shelter IF she belongs to someone nearby. However, like I said, I will keep an eye on her and if she seems not to be taken care of or if she needs help I will take her to a shelter because that's all that I can do for her. Especially since she's not my cat and never said she was or that I was keeping her. Hope that clears it up for you.
