The Knights Templar were Christian soldiers and in fact the first bankers as we see banks today. Traveling to the holy lands was very dangerous, so you could place all your belongings and money with the knights and you were given a note. At the other end of your journey you'd be given money to replace all you had left. The knights also guarded the caravans from bandits. Some stories have a group of Knights Templar guarding the Holy Grail. Weather that is true or not is yet to be seen. King Philip of France did not like te knights Templar. They were very large, very wealthy and stood as a state within a state, paying no taxes. And had a large army that, at the vaticans command could march freely though all Europe. So on Friday, October 13, 1307, many French Templar Knights were captured on the kings orders and tortured in to confessing heresy. This is also why we say Friday 13th is bad luck.
