How is it possible for a trip meter to be higher than the odometer in a new car?

Um I'm no mechanic but something seems off here either something isn't working properly or someone tampered with the odometer

Leaning towards tampering, it is a "brand new" car. Getting no answers from dealer or manufacturer

right me too, since it is a new car there are some things that could "maybe" explain it in an older car as DukeCity said below but a new car?? yeah something is fishy esp if the dealer is unwilling to provide a proper response Call the Better Business Bureau and see what they say, if they aren't the right agency to report it to they should know who is.

Thanks, sound advice. Giving Manufacturer another day for a logical explaniation.

The trip meter can be igher in a new car simply because it gets driven off the car carrier, driven to the car lot, moved around after it's test driven and any other reason it has to be moved.

No, because the odometer would still record the miles as well... there is NO way a trip odometer would be *higher* than the reg odometer on a *new* car unless the odometer was tampered with, it can be lower since you can reset the trip odometer but it can't be higher w/o tampering. ... on an old car if the millage on the reg odometer had turned over it is possible.. but not on a new car

If the odometer rolled over to 0000000 at some time the trip meter can easily outpace the odometer. But DeanaWynn is probably right, it smells of tampering.

I've seen auto techs accidentally roll an odometer from 000001 to 999999 while doing work on other parts of the dash. In a case like that it's easier to just let it roll over than to try to correct it.

Sounds strange! Someone could messed with the mileage to sell it for a higher price. See if you can find out where the car was serviced. They record the mileage even for an oil change.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a trip meter only goes to 4 digit spaces plus the counter digit space, how can it go higher than the odo?

Whoa take it easy.

Well it does get driven around a bit like when it's unloaded from the transport truck, moved around on the lot, test driven even.

This is obviously not the place to ask that question judging by the answers posted!
A new car with a discrepancy between the odometer and speedometer reading is definitely worthy of an answer from the dealer, it needs to be replaced and calibrated obviously. As far as them giving you an explanation... They'll just tell you it's defective, of that I'm certain!

With the lack of an explanation, I was just in search of answers. even bad ones. Thanks
