I have always heard once you get herpes you have the virus for life and medications can help keep it dormant.

Herpes can go dormant, but it will always be contagious. People who have the Herpes virus in their body, can still give it to someone else. The Disease will forever remain in their body, since there is no cure. Even if it heals, and even if there is no symptoms, the Herpes virus is still active.

I heard it is only contagious when it is active.

But I do agree you have it in your body for life.

It is contagious when it's active, but when it is inactive, it can still be contagious. Thank you for agreeing though :)

Herpes Simplex can be just a cold sore around your mouth. When the cold sore is gone you can kiss away and your partner will not catch it. But beware when you have an open cold sore and stay away from kissing someone or touching it then spreading it with your hands.
If you have the other type of Herpes Simplex, I would suggest you talk to your doctor. An old friend of mine who had it, told me she could have sexual relations with her husband as long as it was in its dormant stage. But as soon as she felt any tingling she was to avoid it.

I did hear that, after several years, it became permanently dormant. But you need to research this yourself on the web, I guess.
