The pigment cells in our hair die as we get older.

It's actually from natural occurring excess hydrogen we produce in our bodies. The higher the hydrogen the more we lose pigment in the hair. We can never stop this process so thank goodness for hair dye!

Actually there is some research now looking to reverse the breakdown in cells or chromosomes in the hair. If this could be achieved it would be great.

It doesn't happen to everybody -- I'm an eggshell blond.

My kids used to take bets on whether I'd go completely bald or completely grey first, and bald won.

Of course my beard is grey, and those bits of hair that hang about just above my ears, and even my body hair down as far as the sternum, but the rest of my pelt -- trunk, arms, legs -- is still the same brown as ever. Sometimes I feel like an old rag that God used to clean his paint brushes.

Women, it's all women, I have proof. When my wife and I first got together, we have a family picture, mine and hers, I had dark dark brown hair, 5 years later gray, and it's gotten grayer. I've shown her the pict, but she denies it, typical :P

LOL! I bet the missus has white hair too, she just gets it colored so yu do not notice ;0)

Report as
Actually, no, her hair is brown, with little, I mean very little gray (she pulls the ones she sees) and she does not get it colored, I know for a fact.
Report as
Lucky her! My "blond" streaks have been coming in more and more. I get some added to even it out ;0)
Report as
her sister just younger then her is going gray, he older sister was grayer before she passed, but for some reason, she isn't going very gray. But I love rubbing it in that I wasn't gray until she and I got married.
Report as
Hubster's beard is pure white for a good 5 to 6 years now but his hair is only half white and half blond. The hair doesn't seem to change.

You can rub it with the missus...she can just say you got yourself a young wife ;0)

In some people it is hereditary. One side of my friends family has snow white hair, usually starting around 45-50 yrs of age

Each hair follicle contains a certain amount of pigment cells these pigment cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin that gives the growing shaft of hair its color of brown, blonde, black.. Melanin is the same stuff that makes our skins color fair or darker It also helps determine whether a person will tan or burn in the sun the dark or light color of someones hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains as we get older the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color like grey, silver, or white as people continue to get older fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin eventually the hair will look completely grey people can get grey hair at any age some people go grey at a young age as early as when they are in high school or in collage where as others may be in there 30s or 40s before they see that first grey hair how early we get grey hair is determined by our genes This means that most of us will start having grey hairs around the same age our parents or grandparents first did

Well, I am a cosmetologist and it is proven that as you grow older, the amount of keratin in your body lessens. Keratin is the chemical in your body that gives you more color in your skin, or more color in your hair.

I think that it is stress because I am a twelve year old girl and I have a little bit of white hair I think that it is all the stress and worrying all the time that is my opinion :)

Your hair is actually either white or grey. The color you see is the result of melanocytes in the hair follicle "coloring" your hair as it grows. At some point the cells providing the pigment stop working according to your genetic makeup and your true color emerges. Both my parents' hair turned white rather than grey. I expect mine will be white too.
