I trained dogs at one time. You can teach a dog just about anything with a correction collar and a good leather leash. Walk your dog through the house with the leash and collar, having the puppy on your left side, when you stop, you expect for your puppy to stop. Each time you stop, say "stay", when he continues to move forward, give a jerk with the leash and say "no". Once he begins to stay when you tell him to, pet him and give him affirmation. Dogs want to please their masters. It just takes a little time and repetition.
The most important thing is patience and understanding. Thats a pretty young pup, so understand that you are asking a lot, but you CAN do it, IF you use basic dog psychology. It will noy eaily obey you if you get down on its level too much. Puppys like playmates and love thier leader, thier boss, thier alpha. There is far too much to say about it here. I recomend getting a book like HOW TO TRAIN YOUR PUPPY, or DOG TRAINING FOR DUMMIES. Good luck... and patience.
I would stand in front of my puppy with a small piece of treat and would say stay and put out my hand (palm toward puppy) and move back one step (each day go an extra step back) and if she stays I would give her the treat and say good girl in a happy tone. After a few days she started to get it and it is also good for the leave it command as well just sit with her and put treat in front of her and say leave it and if she does you give her a treat from your hand. worked really well for my bulldog pup.
I think what merrillton is saying will help your dog stay but in addition to his commentary I'd suggest using operant conditioning as in giving a primary reinforcer (such as food) for every time the dog does the proper behavior. Psychology notes that this is the primarily most effective way to train an animal.
love compassion trust this is the beginning no matter the breed been through them all give me any puppy bred to be a champ or a puppy pound the slight effects of love changes the character of your pet right from the start if you gain the puppies trust you'll get it's obedience took the the hardest dogs ever (from status quo) turn them into puppies where they even distinguish right from wrong early on My dogs will walk by my side go pass a school of dogs learning obedience with out a leash with a hundred different barks wont even glance never had to discipline by force little snacks at circumstances times will work let them on the couch or get them their own bed treat them as you want to be treated they will return the favor my tricks are proven its called time and love anyone can train their own dog if they just use reason and patience I wish i could train everybody best friend i would love to see every one happy its a choice help be who you want or not its that simple (clue time will be involved)
First, he needs to know how to sit. Have him sit, show him the treat, and say "Wait" or "Stay". Start to walk away, looking at him, repeat the words. If he starts to move, reinforce him, put him back into position. Do that every time he moves. Once he finally stays and you get how ever far away you want, tell him to come and reward him with his treat. It's pretty simple. :)

Just remember, dogs are very clever and learn things quite quickly. You will be surprised how fast your puppy will learn. Also, practice makes perfect. Am I right? lol Anyway, it will be easy for you. Make sure he/she should learn how to sit first. I used to have a dog, when Teddy was a puppy, she learned how to sit/stay by using treats. we used to always set goals, and do special tricks. Teddy was a very loyal one, if he/she is like that, within 4-7 days, it will learn how to sit and stay. Any help to you? :) visit local pet stores and/or websites will also be a big help.
Get the puppy to sit and then say stay over and over again and while giving treats. Then slowly take one step back at a time while still saying stay...don't forget to use a happy voice and use lots of treats :) If the puppy gets up before you call it, say no in a deeper voice and make it sit where you had it and repeat the process.
Have something you'd know your dog likes, repeat stay about three times hold his/her chest. Slowly step back and hold up your hand and keep on repeating stay. They may not get it at first but keep practicing with him/her until they get it. Whenever they do stay remember to reward them, i'd recommend treats, also saying good (dog's name). That's all i have to say and i hope my advice does you well.
Wait until he's at least 6 months before working on STAY.At his age you should be focusing on walking on a simple buckle collar and lead (no choke collars),the word NO,the words Good Boy!and housebreaking.Don't make a too young pup with a short attention span do highschool work.At 6 months, look for a good Pre Novice obedience class with a trainer and other dogs and puppies to work with
Well.....you usually have to have a treat first.......okay now you make him sit by pushing his hind legs down gently......then you hold him back.......if he stays give him a treat.....if he doesn't .....well then keep trying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Hope I answered your question!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have him sit reward, take a step back if he stays step back toward your dog reward, take a step back again, release him. You have to reward the stay and not the release. Like my Facebook page, I am a dog trainer. https://www.facebook.com/CertifiedDogTrainerPyle
