Which are people more of? Christian or Atheist

Oh and Zaruna I asked which these 2 were of!

Report as

In the USA about 80% of the population is Christian. Worldwide there are 2 billion Christians. 1 Billion muslims, almost a billion Hindus, that's 4 billion, that leaves 3 billion others. There are 1 billion Chinese, most of whom are atheist. that leaves 2 billion, there are lots of other religions, but if we say half of the remaining 2 billion are atheists, 1 billion, plus 1 billion Chinese, that makes 2 billion atheists. I guess it's a tie, 2 billion each.

I wonder how many are really Christian as opposed to, "better say I am just in case", like I used to.

Very accurate guess Tony!

Interesting you say 80% are christian when less than 5% go to church. :) In my area..it's less than 2%. And, I didn't know that most chinese are athiests. Where did you get this info?
Report as
You don't have to go to church to be a Christian. Most Chinese are Buddhists, but I was thinking communism when I wrote that.
Report as
Tony, the Catholics claim 20 million and Protestants claim 240 million Chinese. The official numbers are much less, but underground churches more than triple the numbers.
One has to look at the polling; agnostic or atheist is about 50-53% of Chinese population. See here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_China

Over 80% of us citizens in the US are Christian and less the 10% are Atheist. As for the World population I could not get a number on atheist , however Christians make up about 1/3 of the population.

Actually Gator, latest figures show atheists and 'non-affiliated' count for about 12%.

Note: the "non religious" group ... which makes up 16% ... includes people who claim other than atheist. Such as agnostics, or those who claim to be "spiritual but not religious".

Actually most Chinese are Buddhist! But there is definitely more Christian than atheist. Well, there's a difference in how many people say they are Christian and how many actually 100% beleive. Some just say they are Christian to be accepted or because they come from christian parents. But over all there are more Christians.

Depends on where. Worldwide? In the US? In Europe? You have to be more specific.

Atheism rarely polls higher than 6-8% of the population. In schools of higher education that are state supported, it polls at triple that number. But the average worldwide is less than 10%.
China has about 1.5 billion Buddhists and .5 billion Christians. The majority of worldwide Christians, one billion, are Catholics; 1.2 billion are Protestant and the third largest religion is Buddhism.

You do realize that most Buddhists are atheists, don't you?
Report as
Not to mention the Pew Forum reports only 67 million Christians in China as of the beginning of 2012- a far cry from 500 million.
Report as
It also estimates Buddhism as 18% of the Chinese population, with Taoism and Chinese folk religions 30%, atheist/agnostic 42%, Christianity 4%, and Islam 2%. 18% of 1.344 billion people is not 1.5 billion.

Or did you just make your numbers up without checking?
Report as
Also- the rankings worldwide are:
Christianity
Islam
Atheist/Secular/none
Hinduism
Chinese folk religion
THEN Buddhism, of which there are only 364 million worldwide- which makes it hard for there to be 1.5 billion in China

Pew is only one source; they sampled the large urban areas. Numbers are notoriously unreliable due to the underground church and state persecution. The numbers are from a World Missions estimate from 2010, and take into account the rural areas and underground church. But I am not disputing it is a smallish percent.
The 2005 Pew poll did find, however, that approximately three-in-five Chinese express a personal belief in the possible existence of one or more supernatural phenomena, religious figures or supernatural beings that are often associated with Confucianism and popular forms of Chinese folk religion. These beliefs range from fortune and fate, to the Jade Emperor (associated with Taoism) and Tathagata (a manifestation of Buddha), to immortal souls and ghosts. While this is not necessarily a measure of the extent to which Chinese self-consciously identify with folk or popular religion, it does suggest that popular religious beliefs may be more widespread than is suggested by religious affiliation alone.
The point is, people are religious even in a country that is officially atheist.

officially its like 4%
Report as
You realize supernatural belief is not the same as religion? Also, unrelated to atheism?

My numbers are from 2012, not 2005 as you just posted. The numbers were all inclusive- they had separate numbers for rural versus urban spread, but i used the additive numbers of TOTAL population.
In addition, are you seriously trying to claim that there is a difference of .45 BILLION Christians? Or that the fact that you claimed there are over three times the number of Buddhists in China as reported in the entire world is kosher?

Trying to get out of the fact you invented numbers out of your head that aren't just wrong but VASTLY wrong is a little silly considering how easy it is to find these figures.
Report as
Thank you for the correction. I went back to my source and saw that I had done vertical photography. This means I had misread the numbers and quoted them wrongly. You're right I'm wrong.
