Should people over 70 be allowed to drive?

many people have died from accidents caused by elderly

Report as

Many teens have died as well. As a matter of fact, more teens die in crashes from drugs, drinking and texting. So maybe teens should not get a license till 21?

Only if teenagers are allowed to drive. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for US teens. In 2010, seven teens ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries. Per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash. That's all according to the CDC teen drivers fact sheet.

Actually more have died from accidents caused by younger drivers. I think as we get older (I'm 60) we should have to take the drivers test more frequently. It should be decided on a case by case bases. There are many well over 70 who can still drive very well. If they can't, THEN they shouldn't get to continue to have a drivers licenses.

This is like asking if drunk people should be allowed to drive as long as they don't crash.

It shouldnt matter on age at all.... My grandma is 75 and a very safe driver. It should matter on disabilities when you cant controll it at all.

Yes. My parents are both in their 70s and haven't had an accident in years. They need to be able to drive to get around to doctors appointments, see grandkids, vacation, etc.

The question isn't as silly or as offensive as it seems. In Oz we have a number of safeguards. Now that I've passed 75 I have to undertake a medical examination each year to renew my licence. When I reach 85 I'll have to pass a road test each year.

Yes, some old people are a menace on the road but their numbers are relatively small. Most of us, with a lifetime of driving behinds us -- and that may be accident free -- are as well qualified to drive as younger people, and far better qualified than inexperienced new drivers.

But people age differently and obviously a person who is medically unfit to drive is a menace on the road -- at any age. I wonder whether your question could be widened a little to include drunks and junkies? Perhaps, while we're changing those laws, we could also permanently ban people who use cell phones or who text while they're driving.

Once we start banning drivers it really does open a Pandora's box.

Report as
Sorry, Seryl. I didn't realise you had a reading problem.
Report as
Maybe it needs to be in large print......
Report as
What does 'too lenthly' mean, exactly? Is this a new language? I have enough trouble keeping up with English without people going off and creating new languages all over the place.

Report as
I did notice that, Mr O'Thin, but didn't comment. You wouldn't expect anybody who gets chapped lips reading half a dozen lines of text to be able to spell.
Report as
OzMan & ThinMan:

I am just as disgusted by the lack of care with the English language as well.
Although I am sure I make mistakes, the two of you are kind enough not to point them out.

Many people rely on spellcheck and do not bother to proof before they post.

The abbreviations (although I do use a couple of them) are irritating beyond belief!!!

Report as
I'll admit to finding texting abbreviations irritating, Yosey, but I have a simple solution for that. I don't both to answer them.

If you're following CJ take a look at her latest question. I just spent half an hour trying to answer it and I'm thoroughly confused. Let's see what my feathered friend can come up with: http://www.ask.com/answers/309842241/4-pics-1-word-question?qsrc=3111

Old people can be annoying when they're driving, because they're usually not in a hurry.

Young people can be annoying too, because they're usually in a hurry.

So... It all depends on your viewpoint. I'm 66 and find EVERYBODY annoying! :))

Teen drivers are dangerous drivers. Many teens underestimate a situation, driving hazard, speed, braking distance, etc :

"In 2010, about 2,700 teens in the United States aged 16–19 were killed and almost 282,000 were treated and released from emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes."

Anyone who is of legal driving age and can pass the written and road tests should be allowed to drive. Age, in this case, is just a number. Frankly everyone under the age of 21 and over the age of 70 should be tested every year. We all age differently and you cannot restrict someone from doing something just because of how old they are (as and adult anyway).

I notice yos, that you fit very comfortably almost right in the middle of the ages you mentioned. Coincidence? I think not!

I declare a prophecy. Your '70' limit for annual tests will increase to 75 or 80 as you approach those wonderful years, the 60's.

Hi Yosey, You have to stop writing these l-o-o-o-ong answers. They cause problems for our less literate interlocutors especially the present one who has apparently just discovered this question and has been perambulating through the responses, remonstrating with anybody who takes more than a (short) sentence to expound their views on this ageless, age problem.

Fortunately there were very few of them and only the Eagle the Salad, and the Oz Man were castigated.

And if you're wondering about my side-trip into sesquipedalian terminology I thought she might find it entertaining trying to work out what the deuce we were talking about. Hope she doesn't get chapped lips.
Report as
Maybe a sore jaw as well........it is HARD to read sometimes......

I bet eagle chicks would have no trouble reading it.

She also thinks that if you have a criminal record you shouldn't be allowed to drive.

DMV: I'm sorry sir/madam. You shoplifted a loaf of bread. You are eligible to drive a motor vehicle.
Report as
My God! A criminal record? Send 'em to the colonies!
Report as

Depends on their sight and mental condition. They should be examined by a medical specialist before issuing them driving permit.

After you hit the age 70, i think you should have to take a yearly test to make sure your still safe to drive. Your right, a lot of accidents are caused by the old people because they think they are such a good driver they dont have to be as cautious, resulting in the injury or death of someone else and themselves
