I bought a Chevy Cobalt 2010 with 30k miles for $10,000 (plus tax, etc.) Find out when the dealership turns in their sales numbers for the month... usually you get MUCH better deals then, especially if their numbers are low.
It also really depends on the features you need. For example the Toyota Tacoma is a popular, cheap truck, but usually only a 2-seater and not good for "real" hauling work.
