Because that traitorous (blakety blank blank blank) went to Hanoi during the Vietnam War to give aid and comfort to the enemy, giving them propaganda to use against our troops. It, sorry, "she", visited our POW's, one handed her a tiny sliver of paper on which he had wriiten "torture", hoping she would give the message to our people, instead she gave it to the prison guards.
As you can see, the term "Hanoi Jane" was intended to defame the actress for being against the Viet Nam War very much like the way John Kerry got "swiftboated". Cons took a Joe McCarthy attitude toward her when they christened her with that name, and it's clear that cons still do.
I expect that 30 years from now cons will still be insisting that both the Viet Nam War and the Iraq Invasion were smart things to do...even when it's clear that the rest of us know better.
During the Vietnam conflict many US citizens were adamantly against the war and protested and marched against it. They are just citizens stating their opinion. Jane Fonda, on the other hand, went far beyond protesting and she was a traitor in my mind.
these are all good answers. Something less known to most is that hanoi jane and kerry both earned a display in the vietnam communist museum as people who helped further the VC cause. Americans? they should both be executed as traitors. look it up.
