What's your least favorite change to the ask.com community guidelines? ( I Didn't say what's your favorite so I should be safe)

I haven't had any questions removed. One answer was removed and it should have been. It sounded rude. I have had comments get the "oops" but they were always put back up right away. I've never been out on a time out so there must be a lot of comments allowed before a time out because I usually comment at least once. I think people liked the poll questions because it was an easy way to get points. It shouldn't be that way for those of us who try to answer science, math, and English help for the ESL users, and many times those get no votes anyway. It really is the same as when I first started. Actually, I have noticed that the moderators are going out of their way to help others understand the changes and many times they DO address what needs to change when they respond to questions. There are so many different personalities to deal with on here. In reality, the whole thing still "works" as a community. There is ONE THING I get concerned about. In serious questions, the "fun" button gets pushed and it hurts other's feelings. Perhaps that button could go, but only for that reason.

Sincerity I am happy to hear you've been OK with the changes and you are right the rules (other than one or two) are exactly like they used to be before Ask relaxed them last year.

Hopefully the Fun button will be re evaluated, it hasn't been a popular change and the intention it was meant for is being circumvented. Ask had hoped it would encourage helpful answers since those are the only ones that count toward total votes, but unfortunately that isn't happening. People give their friends helpful votes for fun answers and people they don't like fun votes for helpful answers :(

I didn't think of that possibility that someone would give a fun cote ro someone they they didn't like. I guess that could be what I'm seeing and just didn't realize it. That must be what's happening when I see someone really needing help and some of the answers are met with fun votes, which not only hurts the answerers feelings but the poster's feelings too. I figured it was just some younger ones just hitting the fun buttons as much as they could all over the place thinking it was funny. Thank you for pointing that out.

Technically under the new rules this would go if it were any other subject.. but.. the boss likes to see the answers to these sorts of polls as it provides valuable feedback from the community that we often don't otherwise see :) .. Everyone, please be constructive in your criticism, we understand not all of Ask's changes are always popular but what you say here *can* work toward Ask modifying some things, but flaming Ask will not accomplish that and only result in your answer being removed.

I think they are being a bit to strict and when you ask them what you have done wrong they just tell you to read some guidelines . The thing with that is there's no connection it would be nice to actually talk to someone .

Shane sometimes the Moderators are just slammed busy and don't have time to go into detail... or the violation is one Ask would rather we not discuss on the open site. However please keep in mind the "door" to Customer Support is *always* open and while you may have to wait for an answer it is THE best way to get open honest answers about questions like this

that is true I will do that next time I have a question. Thank you for your time .

I agree with the changes ask.com has done with the polls, but I do think ask is changing and its users are changing so it might be hard too prevent some of these things. I think being specific is important too prevent things like joking around about the question and stuff. a lot of website just seem similar too each other. I havent noticed too many problems but would things like

what was the last song you listened too ect. be removed is what I wonder its not a compare 2 things or a yes or no questions

Ive seen many other forums do this

if it doesnt promote conversation its removed..

the commenting does bug me a little I do understand its not a chat website, but it does carry on conversation and help that person out stubborn people can't be helped with limited comments.

I think ask.com users should also have a comment remaining number and every time you get a helpfull on a question you get 1 added too encourage benefitting the community.

I miss green thumbs theres alot of immature ppl that will just fun a good answer becuse they dont understand it..people use too thumb up things they found funny and helpfull.

goodluck ask.com if your reading this

coolspot, the question you asked about, at the stage the guidelines are in now would be removed.... Ask is trying to focus on quality and a question like that is considered more of hmm something you would post on Facebook if you get what I am saying. Ask want's more "meat" to the questions so while that would likely be removed one that said... I am looking for some new music to listen to, what was the last good song you listened to" So it is, a lot of times all in the wording, just changing the question that much makes the question itself have a purpose rather than just being a random poll because someone is bored. I hope I am explaining this properly, I know it can be confusing

i understand perfectly

heres a message I got from a forum moderator on a Anime website
Well, the reason why that thread was locked is simply because it does not encourage discussions. In nature, it is a thread for people to come list A, B, C or whatever amount of things they are willing to list. The kind of discussions you'd get in that thread wouldn't really be relevant to anime either. Simply put, it would encourage spam, which is something that is against MAL's forum rules and guidelines.

right well on an Anime website I can see them being stricter abut Questions when it come to being topical, that just makes sense. Of course "on topic" really only applies to answers on Ask as we cover pretty much all topics (as long as they are legal and not graphic/pornographic etc) But as you say it is a trend in Q&A and other sites to try to limit or eliminate the "random polls" which most sites feel are rather low quality and serve no purpose other than as entertainment, which is more the venue of social media sites like FB. Q&A and topical discussion boards want to focus on information not "just for fun" polls

I do remember seing more types of questions that were just asked too get alot of responses like

heres a great example I was a newer user at this point but this 1 question was asked for about 3 days straight brings back memories you a moderator around at this point deanawynn?

EXAMPLE:
http://www.ask.com/answers/210806261/do-i-look-pretty

but I think this will cause certain types of people too leave the site as alot of teens only like that stuff but cant fight the direection a site is going in.
Report as
Right we have eliminated the "look at me" type questions.. am I pretty/ugly/fat/skinny... would you date me etc aside from being poor quality they really did invite the trolls and flamers to step in, then feelings would get hurt and fights would break out... no really what Ask wants to present to the "world".

Well thanks goodluck with it all your going too get alot of grief but I believe its for the right reasons I think alot of sites just get corrupt and im sure they owner wants too run the site not the community.
Report as
Thanks :) we do get a lot of grief but then being able to help members like you and the others makes it all worthwhile :)

whatever makes you happy :)

I get enough grief for trying too give advice too people on here and appy some of the community guidlines you have too daily life from people.

Comment limit.

Sometimes discussions, explanations, speculations, and just overall communication about stuff that are related to the topic and what not are discussed. It's free communication without the phone and with the internet. Not much sense really in limiting the comments within the given time frame you are giving. I think it is just to limit the "stuff" being moderated and censored by the site, but some topics and answers and explanations do really go longer, DEMANDING the "comment exchange".

Give us a break, there's so much Q's being deleted already, what more can we really FREELY do in this site anymore?

One thing I don't like are the new rules for the polls; I understand you want serious questions to be answered more, but sometimes, no one knows the answers to them. Poll questions can be useful sometimes.

Leone, sometimes HOW you word stuff makes a big difference polls that are meant to be helpful to you are fine but you kind of need to make it clear that you are not just asking random stuff for no reason than to see what ppl say. So instead of asking something like Xbox Vs PS3 which is better.... if you word it as, I am going to buy a new game console, I like "x" type of games which has better/more games like this" then it becomes an acceptable question :)

So far I have no problems with the new guidelines. I see a lot less of the childish questions that were asked for the amusement of a younger users. This is suppose to be an information site not an entertainment site.
