One major goal is to help the opposition build up its credibility within Syria by providing traditional government services to the civilian population. Another is to jump start negotiations over a political transition by sending a message to Mr. Assad that the rebels will ultimately prevail.
To this date, America is a free country. If some of the other countries have their way, we will not be free long. It's up to us to keep our freedom. Budget cuts, if anyonoe will just use their mind, can come from Fed Gov't Waste, and there is plenty of it, and not from the military or protecting our country.
It is in our best interest in the long run to help those who we perceive as allies. We will benefit if not now in the future. For the most part, that's how the 'powers to be" rationalize. It is just being smart.

They believe in doing this they can destabilize the middle east, unfortunately they forgot that they helped out Iraq 30 years ago and installed a fellow from Tikrik, and now look what has happened. Even with Gaddafi, he was suppose to get a fair trial but got a bullet thru the head.
