A good thing to do, it to teach all the letters first. After they have a good understanding of that. Get them to write one letter of their name at a time, until they eventually write out their name.Just remember, have patience. This doesn't happen overnight.
Hi Laura- A subject near & dear to me. I taught my kids to read before kindergarten and now my grandson. I was a literacy tutor. Start with the alphabet when young-then the sounds they make- then vowels. Put together & stir. It's beautiful. They ARE capable of learning. I started early. They were reading at approx a 2nd grade level in kindergarten. It's a gift that keeps on giving. Know when to quit, because they bore easily. Have fun!
