What is the importance of beauty? Why do we have beauty?

my teacher in my film class asked us some questions about beauty, before putting in a film (which I personally do not think portrayed beauty at all....) but anyway, I just found this question interesting. None of us really had an answer, and my mind kinda went ______. (I've never personally thought about this.) I think it was a hard question, because everyone has such a different perception of what beauty is. Anyway, big tangent, what do you think the importance of beauty is?

Importance? That also varies by one's meaning or perception of importance. I myself don't see much value in it, as most "Judge the book, by the cover". Meaning that, when someone sees a beautiful person, they could treat them differently based on their "Beauty".
As for why? As I mentioned earlier, Perception. We never made it. It was just there. Some can argue we have it as form of attraction to another, but I see differently. (Which doesn't mean I am right)

Exactly why the question kinda confused me:it's all perception really. He went on to further ask what the purpose of it was, and said "think about it,every part of our body has a purpose." (I don't remember everything he said.) And I don't think beauty is exclusive to humans either.

The importance of beauty is to show us to open our eyes. We don't have to go far to seek it; it exists in the world around us, in love, and ideas.

its something hard-wired in us. even infants will look longer at attractive faces.
beauty both excites and gives peace..
beauty is health.....as far as reproduction goes and the desire to pass on our genes.

Interesting! I like it.

But wait-what makes you so sure babies look longer at "beautiful" faces?

proven scientific experiments

And these "experiments" are? (I'm only asking because that could be good for my future essay.)

random photos of inviduals ( pre-rated by adults ) were flashed at infants. eye tracking monitors gauged the amount of time the children spent looking at the photos.

Huh? (Elaborate maybe?) babies looking at pictures, or wait, what? (Tired, but also got confused.)

I do like your answer though-don't get me wrong. Very scientific, and true! I do believe beauty has importance.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That's a common quote, and it's so true. I think a beautiful face is just healthy, clean, natural, and with a genuine smile.

Most of the factors that we consider beautiful are the factors that display good health. No matter what our intention is on a date, in the back of our subconscious is a primitive human looking for a healthy mate. Consider: shiny, lustrolus hair -- health; clear, unmarked skin -- health; clean, white, straight teeth -- health; bright, clear eyes -- health; not too heavy, not too thin -- health; good posture and straight bones -- health. That's what we're attracted to when we're attracted to human beauty.

Throughout history, it has become apparent that the more attractive you are, the more likely you are to mate.
So, it's an evolutionary trick to keep your genes going.

Well, I think beauty is important because it can be found in almost anything. The sooner we learn to look for true beauty, and not simply what society has told us is beauty, we will begin to discover larger parts of things we didn't see before all around us. And not just in the physical beauty either, beauty in things people normally wouldn't deem beautiful.

And I also would agree that each individual perceives beauty a different way.
