Should a teacher ever tell a class they are a waste of "my time and space"?

Report as

Well, technically no.....however, kids these days can be brutally disrepectful and downright unruly so I can understand WANTING to say something like that.....but actually saying it is pretty much just wrong since there are probably some good kids in the class doing what they are supposed to and they don't deserve to be treated like that......

My math teacher told us this. She was mad because she gave us a quiz and almost everyone failed it. I get she was frustrated but didn't think it was right that she said that.
Report as
You're right, she definitely shouldn't have said that, especially if almost the whole class failed.....and in regards to that, if almost the whole class failed then maybe the teacher needs to find a better way to teach.......do people fail her tests and quizzes a lot???
Report as
Not really. She's usually a really good teacher but she's not teaching as well for some reason. I usually have some trouble with quizzes and tests because I'm dyslexic (I usually get between 85-90s on them) but it just takes more for me. I'm not the only one that hasn't done that well in the last couple of quizzes.

Maybe she's distracted by personal problems? If so it's still sad she's vocalizing her frustrations in such a negative way to you all.:-(.

Excellent point, NAFTA. There's always at least one kid in the class as frustrated at the douches as the teacher.

They should hold votes like on Survivor.....who's leaving the class this week.....until all the bad eggs are gone....8)

Nafta, not a bad idea.. Does the teacher get the million if she "Survives"??

I was assuming the prize would be better informed kids.....but I guess a million bucks sounds good too....8)

I go to a private school and the class is actually behaved very well. Either way, if it was a private or public school, I don't think a teacher should ever say that.

Dana, all jokes aside; I agree with you, a teacher is and should be held to high standards and should try at all times to set an example for their students.
Behaviour and statements such as your teacher seems to be putting out should be dealt with. Hope you get some results and things go back to her being the good teacher you say she used to be.

I hope.

No because their job is to teach the students. It shouldn't be a waste of time because people are getting educated and the teacher is getting a pay check.

What should I do then?
Report as
I would tell a counselor or Principal because the teacher may not be taking their job seriously. If you don't want to do that ask the teacher what is worth their time, (in a caring sort of way) because they are people too.
Report as
I was thinking of telling my principal. She usually teaches well but it hasn't been very good the last couple of months.
Report as
Yeah, telling your principle will be good because then they know somethings wrong and they can handle it with her from there.
Report as
Couple of months definitly warrants a talk with someone; you should be able to count on getting decent education from any teacher, if she's having problems outside the classroom she needs to deal with them and not let it affect her job for that long.:-(

A teacher is not supposed to utter such words since he or she should be a good role model to the students he or she teaches. Such words always discourage most students and they also hurt others.

I think it's all in the wording. Saying "you are wasting my time" is different than "you are a waste of my time." The latter implies permanence. That being said, I have taught classes that were a waste of my time, but not because of the students. Because of the uninformed curriculum demands and lack of administrative support. Now, telling an administrator that a class is a waste of your time? Nothing wrong with that.

It's amazing how the addition or removal of one word can totally change the "context" of a statement....
Report as
She said exactly "you are a waste of my time and space"

Indeed! My avatar was a master at pointing that out.
