is soldering the same as welding

No ! Soldering is done with low heat and soft lead like material . Welding is done with high heat with copper wire or brass rods or steel rods ! One's high heat and one is low heat !

Depends on which one you're doing ! Welding is generally very strong and soldering is mainly for electrical work like soldering two wires together !

I would use a mig welder, better heat control! Set it to 175 and see if it doesn't blow thru, you may have to turn it down if its less than 3/16"
