125 or 250 2 stroke for beginner? 5'11 170lbs. Mainly for trail riding

I keep reading that a 125 2 stroke is more than enough bike to learn on but people tell me just to get a 250 and I will grow into it. Is a 250 too much for someone with no riding experience?

Go with the 250 ! You're tall enough and weigh enough that it will be a perfect fit ! Make sure you get some good safety gear too ! Yeah , you'll dump it a few times as you learn but the 250 has more power and is more comfortable also ! I rode and raced big bore dirt bikes for twenty years ! You'll burn out on the 125 as they are like a big mini-bike ! Get the 250 and after a couple of months , you'll thank me for it ! Have fun and stay safe !

A 250 is ok to begin as well, even if a 125 is also sufficient. Keep in mind that a 250 is somewhat heavier, which doesnt make trail easier. I'd prefer a 4 stroke for that, though. It gives you more flexible power, when you go slow or jump from standing. 2 strokes are better for cross, where you go fast and can keep the revs up.
