What do you answer to "thank you" when you haven't really done anything to help the person? For example when you hand your homework in.

It's a courteous phrase you will hear all the time.... Just nod your head or say "you're welcome"
You're welcome, is the appropriate response. Your teacher is showing you respect and teaching you manners at the same time.
