Okay so due to some health issues my doctor told me to go off gluten for one week and see if there is a difference.

I know it seems crazy but I actually have no clue what gluten is? and how to avoid it. any advice?

You can look here for explanations and a guide for a gluten free diet. Yes, gluten is a protein found in several grains. A common reason to eliminate gluten is celiac disease.

I'll try to link you to a friend who has experience. Good luck! Hope you feel better. :)

Panda... Most grocery stores now carry items that are labeled Non Gluten or Gluten Free. Look for it on the labels.
Also, please note that a lot of vitamins and supplements may have gluten in them as well.
This is a MAJOR diet change... but possibly a very important one. My girlfriend has Celiacs Disease and requires a gluten free diet. Her oldest boy has an allergy to Gluten and he has to eat gluten free as well.
Gluten is a wheat protein but that particular protein is used as a thickener in a lot of different foods. When you shop, make certain that the label says GLUTEN FREE. If it doesnt say it.... dont buy it.
The taste of some of these items will take some getting use to. The texture and taste will take some getting use to for a lot of people.
It is also more expensive.... but the cost definitely outweighs the risks.
Let me know if I can answer anything else for you.

Thank you. I wish I could star comments! I had no idea it was in vitamins and supplements, or used as a thickener. I'm so glad you helped. You're the best!

You can probably find a list somewhere on the Internet. My understanding is that gluten is food made from grains.

It's a substance found in grains. Some people are allergic to it, and they have stomach problems when they eat it.

Yeah. It's really common, you just have to avoid eating gluten if you're allergic.

Gluten is found in grains. Like flour. So you can't eat cookies, bread, and anything that uses flour or grains

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and lots of other grains.
Basically, avoid breads, grains, donuts, bagels, beer, and many processed foods.
Check the labels on your foods. If it doesn't specifically say "Gluten-Free" then check the ingredient label. Companies are supposed to list Allergens under the nutritional label.

Other names for gluten is wheat, rye and barley. Anything with those ingredients contains gluten. I have been gluten free for almost 3 yrs. :)

Sorry; I find it hard to believe that an actual doctor would tell you to avoid gluten for health reasons but then not tell you how to avoid it.

Well he told me the basics like "stay away from grains" and what not but you never can be too careful! He also sucks as a doctor and I'm getting a new one soon so yeah :)
