Corn snakes, ball pythons, garter snakes, sand boas, rat snakes, milk snakes, racers, and king snakes are all good snakes to be kept as a companion! However, please do handle your companion often. De-socialization WILL make them easily scared and they will be VERY defensive! And snake will do this, not just the ones I've mentioned. However, http://bhbreptiles.com/ has a "well-started" option, meaning they are already a few weeks old & handled. Beware, though, after the trip, your snake WILL NEED some time to adjust, don't handle it for a day or so. If they are still restless, try handling. Remember, with the opportunity of having a snake, there will be some "bad days" for your snake where it just doesn't want to be held or is hungry. It will bite if it think you are food, and it will hang on. It will bite if you invade it's space on a bad day, BUT most of the time they will be a kind of snap-then-retreat sort of strike, and you should leave your snake alone. Don't let bites deter you from getting a snake, they don't hurt as much as you'd think. My girl Buttersock is a mean one, but I don't even feel the bites now.
