Why college athletes should be paid

Report as

They shouldnt be paid. They are in college. They should be going to class and learning something... They get WAY over paid when they go into pro sports.

Why should college athletes be paid? They shouldn't, education is important, games is secondary.

-Because if you are doing a job (and doing it well), you should get paid.
-I also believe if you try, you should recieve a reward (even if it is just a simple thankyou)!

They need to be paid because not only are they going to school but they are playing a sports or sports which does not allow them to get a job. A lot of these athletes families are struggling to pay for their school fees alone, and as a result these athletes if they are good enough are going pro earlier instead of finishing there schooling. whereas if they were paid a decent amount of money it would encourage more athletes to stay in school longer. and if they get hurt in the future atleast they will have an education to fall back on.

They shouldn't get paid. They get scholarships and sometimes they get good grades they don't deserve so they can keep playing.

They shouldn't get paid. And most athletes do not get scholarships, or only get partial ones. Sports are an extracurricular activity. Athletes play by there choice.

They shouldn't be paid, but they should have their education reimbursed (i.e. scholarships.) If it became legal to pay college athletes, that would put the focus on the school that paid the most, rather than the school that provided the best education.

they SHOULD get paid!!! the major sports at colleges make zillions of dollars off these athletes! very few college players get to play pro ball, so there is no argument there!! also, there training during the off season and practices and traveling during the season make having a regular job prohibitive. having said this, lets remember that their education should always come first and foremost...;-)

Well, why shouldn't people get paid to go to med school, or to learn the trades of plumbing and carpentry? Those are jobs that are far more important to public welfare than athletes.

No. That would put collegiate sports in a whole new arena, it would no longer be amateur but professional. Sports agents wouldn't mind that idea I'll bet, more profit for them.

I believe athletes should be paid for numerous reasons. Many are outlined in this article here in the NY Times and many other articles across the internet. Bottom line is college sports is a big business, and the athletes are what make the whole thing go. So, we need to start looking at paying the workers.

Only 12% of college athletics programs are profitable. That means 88% of athletic programs are losing money. But 60% of college athletes receive at least a partial scholarship. Even for those that don't get scholarships, they still get uniforms, travelling expenses, free coaching at a sport they enjoy, free exposure to professional organizations. They are paid in some form or another, and often at a loss to the school that is losing money by sustaining the program.
For those schools that have profitable athletics programs, most offer a large number of scholarships, full or partial. These are large and recognized schools that provide a valuable education.
No one is forced to participate in college athletics. If they aren't happy with playing for free, they can quit and continue taking classes like every other college student.
