If each student is served half an orange , how many oranges will be needed to serve 9 students

how many oranges will be needed to serve nine students

Report as

If each student is served a half an orange, 9 students will need four and a half oranges. From algebra, if one student takes a half an orange then two will have one. This implies eight students will need four oranges and the last student a half since he or she is alone. Thus four and a half oranges for nine students.

5 oranges but there would be 1 half left over.

It would be 4 1/2 not 5 1/2.
