1.) Subtract 2 from each side, which would get you a=3+4a. Then subtract 4a from both sides. You would get -3a=3. Divide each side by -3. You have your answer!

a+2=5+4a
-2 -2

a=3+4a
-4a -4a

-3a=3
/-3 /-3

a=?
