When did society get so thin skinned...?

I mean seriously do most people realize what schools are limiting kids from doing. For one, it's almost illegal to say the word gay. You call someone gay and it's the worst thing in the world and you get a nice trip to the principal. And even if they are gay, why should it matter? Another thing that drives me nuts is the issues on the ideas of guns in school. Did anyone hear about the kids that tackled the gunned kid in school (who was indeed loaded) and disarmed him were suspended for getting involved in violence? What has our world come to and why? There are many other gun examples in school I could say as well but running out of room....

No you can say gay as long as it is in an appropriate context. It's when you use the word to label somebody in a bad light that you would cross the line into an expression of hate. The Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transexual LGBT community states that the use of the term gay is acceptable as long as it isnt being used as a device of hatred. Name calling is never appropriate. Are you upset that it is not nice to call people any names? Did you need a rule to prevent you from doing this?

well a friend of mine was suspended for calling a friend of his gay. He's not gay and the friend didn't care but a teacher heard and reported him to the principal and the rest is history...

tis a shame. America should have freedom of speech. I miss when people could actually bust each other's chops without being punished by insecure people...

Yes. I hear even if you defend yourself from anything you can go to jail it seems like they want bad people to do what they do nowadays.

It seems to me that people are being encouraged to make snap judgments and decisions based on emotion, rather than taking the time to look at all facts and reason through the pros and cons.
It -is- insulting and hateful to use the word "gay" as an insult. Kids should be disciplined for that, just like they should be disciplined for using racial, religious, and ethnic slurs. Detention? Definitely. Suspension, that's an emotional snap judgment going overboard unless the kid is a repeat offender. Kids are in school to be taught.
The whole gun mess is full of hysteria, bad snap judgments, and people being pushed to act not think.
If I had a kid in school these days, I'd want metal detectors and searches at the doors, and either armed security or teachers allowed to concealed carry. The Gun Free Zone Act for schools was an hysterical response that is counterproductive in reality. A sign isn't going to protect anybody.

I agree with the your opinions on the whole "gun mess hysteria" but I don't agree with gay being the same level as a racial slur. I can call you gay and not be sexist. I have nothing against gays. Gay is not a "bad" word (probably will be soon though) Yeah school is to learn but people and kids especially do need to socialize and guys calling each other gay is one of the ways we bust each other's stones. And it's been that way for a while now. Why is it a problem now?
Report as
Ok, so do black guys like it when white guys "bust each others stones" by calling each other the "N word"? They aren't black, so why should it matter??
NO, the black guys hate it! Why? Because their people got tortured and killed by the same people who called them by that name in the old days.
(notice I can't even TYPE that insult word or this comment gets deleted).
The black community took back that word and most are extremely (!) offended if whites use it as an insult, even to other whites.
The homosexual community did the same, but they transformed the word into an accepted name -- and are offended if it is STILL used as an insult rather than a mere description of sexual identity.

The Civil Rights movement is a bit older than the Gay Rights movement, so they are a bit farther along in the process.

Ok, but how about the blacks that use that word to each other? Is that ok? I don't think so. That is racist. Just because I'm white it shouldn't mean I can't say that word. (not that I do I rarely curse) Color should have nothing to do with saying that word personally a find that word vile and think neither black, white, Hispanic or any other race should say that word however, I don't consider the word gay the same thing as that word.

People (besides me) have tried to convince you that it IS offensive to use "gay" as an insult or as a negative adjective, even in joking around. But you don't want to believe it.
OK. *Shrug*
If you still truly believe that, then by all means keep using it that way.
-- I just really really hope that none of your friends or acquaintances are secretly gay (and afraid to admit it) because it will make them feel really really crappy.
And if you truly feel it is racist that you can't use the N word because you are white .... Uh no, wait, don't try challenging that one. It might be better to just suck it up and be "oppressed" about that one. Lol!

Hey, I just got an idea. You've been asking stuff like "why should it matter" and etc.
Maybe you should just talk directly to a bunch of people who are openly gay? You know, just get it a bunch of direct feedback from a bunch of people that it might/might not offend, and ask them why it does or doesn't?
If there's a LGBT group at your school you could ask if you could visit. And ask that. Or, I bet there are groups for teens (outside of school) that you could ask.
... Just a thought. :)

Heh, or teen forums online.... Don't know why I didn't think of that first. :p
:D
Report as
Yeah I suppose I could do that. But I don't see why it would matter if someone was secretly gay. I joke around because we're not gay. If they turned out to be gay, then I wouldn't judge him for it. Nor would I stop being their friend. Honestly, I didn't expect this many people to answer my question lol! Most of the time I get one or two. This was meant to be a rhetorical question-ish and be more of a rant than anything else. I respect your opinion though and thank you for our "debate". It was fun!
