Because of their attachment to technology. It's become so much of a habit that they are used to texting or checking their apps/facebook/ e-mail all the time. Also, many phones are geared towards multitasking because nowadays no one sits down and focuses on one task. Despite the dangers, people ignore common sense because they sincerely believe they are incredible at multitasking and can drive and text at the same time.

Maybe common sense doesn't live within them?

I have no clue. I'm a "No texting while driving" advocate. I have a friend who was on her way home from a baby shower, with her 3 and 4 year old babies in the back seat. She was driving along at night, and was hit head on by a 17 year old girl, who was passing in a no passing zone, and texting while driving. She lost her two babies that night, and she was severely injured herself. The 17 year old went to jail, and was released recently. There was a huge controversy here about that.

Please make sure you DO NOT text and drive. Not only could you lose your own life, but you are putting other people lives in danger as well!

People who text and drive think an accident could never happen to them.

You answered your own question. They have no common sense. They think it won't happen to them. That is the basic train of thought with everything people do that is wrong when they get behind the wheel. "It won't happen to me". Including drinking and driving, driving recklessly, etc. People think they can handle it. Until it happens to them, and they kill somebody.....then they want somebody to "understand" they made a "mistake". I think the fines should be much stiffer. I have a hands free text mode on my phone, and rarely even use that. I really don't even like to talk on the phone and drive if I can avoid it. If it's important, that's one thing, but just "idle" chit chat, nope. It can wait.

People who text and drive aren't that much different from people who put on make up while driving, read while driving, play with the radio while driving (not changing a station but repeatedly messing with it) people who eat while driving.
All of them are positive they are great drivers.
Accident rates won't change until Americans quit looking at driving as something to do while they are busy doing something else.

Common sense isn't so common. People play with their phones and it becomes second nature, same with cars and driving. I think most people ARE responsible WHEN they stop and think - they DONT text and drive. BUT it gets so comfortable, that they just do it... even though they know its dangerous, even though they know its against the law and it could cost them fines or they could hurt someone..... they just do it..... as a second nature.... talk on the phone/text while driving. DO NOT GET SO COMFORTABLE WITH DRIVING - because YOU HAVE A 3000+ pound weapon in your hands!!!!!

Last Friday I took a cab.... the driver just finished telling me about how texting and driving was bad.... then while I WAS TEXTING - he looked over my shoulder to see the address I was looking at and he almost hit the curb...... An hour later my friend picks me up and without thinking picks up his phone and almost drives into incoming traffic. Smartphone addicts are off in another time and place - instead of IN THE CAR WHERE THEY SHOULD BE!!!!!!

A LOT CAN HAPPEN IN JUST A FEW SECONDS!!!! Stay off the phone while driving!
