Can the word "Aspie" be offensive to someone with Aspergers Syndrome?

I have heard people call themselves an "Aspie", but could others find it to be an offensive term?

It would depend on the attitude of the person using it. I would never use such a term to someone I didn't know well, as it would easily be taken as demeaning and once you've made that awful first impression, it's hard to "un-make" it.

It shouldn't be. It's just a shortened form of Asperger's. I see many people use it in Autism and other Special Needs groups, and on fundraising merchandise, so it doesn't seem that anyone within that Community finds it offensive. Potentially I could see someone feeling that maybe the term doesn't encompass the seriousness of the condition, but don't really think that it's actually offensive to them.

I thinks its one of those things its OK for them to use for themselves if they wish but not really for anyone else to use.
