Martin Luther stood up to the Catholic Church, and helped start new denominations of churches. One of which was Anabaptism(he did not directly start this, just influenced) which is where we got our principals of separation of church and state, and religious freedom. That's how he influenced our society today. Otherwise he stopped the selling of indulgences, challenged the idea of purgatory, and supported the lower class when they were being oppressed during the renaissance. He did other stuff but I'm to lazy to finish. I hope this helped.
