Yes they instinctively know what love is I would say, but they comprehend it differently than we do.(we can comprehend and talk about "love" in an intelligent way, they simply instinctively react to it and offer it back) You can tell by the way they receive affection, care, attention and protection (otherwise known as love :) and by the way they react to it as apposed to anger, negligence, harshness and and violence.
One time I was playing with my dog and she sometimes bit me or clawed at me playfully. One day I pretended that she killed me after she clawed at me by falling back and not moving. I dont know if dogs can cry, but it sure sounded like she was crying when she thought she had killed me. I never forgot that day. It was the day I learned that dogs could feel strong emotions.
