Siddhartha Gautama, otherwise known as the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the gardens of Lumbini, which is now part of Nepal. The gardens soon became a place of pilgrimage; the Indian emperor Ashoka was one of the better known pilgrims. Ashoka erected a commemorative pillar in the gardens.
