How do I restore a antique metal chamber pot from a potty chair?

My husband and I are restoring an old potty chair for our daughter. The chair itself is easy enough (sand, stain, seal, decoupage, seal again). But, we can not put the chamber pot back in as is since the rest will look so nice. Plus, it is navy blue with white speckles and rust spots, I would like to be able to paint it white. (So, she can see when she pees.) My husband wants to just spray paint over it with Rustoleum after using some sort of thing that he says makes rust a paint-able surface, which is OK, but I was wondering if there was a way to make it look a little better since there are chips in the enamel.

The first step towards restoring the chamber pot would be to remove the rust. In addition, the restoration is dependent on the material used to make the pot and polishing without painting might do the trick.

You can have the metal sand-blasted (See the Yellow Pages) which will remove all paint down to the metal surface itself .

i think it has a cover over the metal. Not paint since it is so thick. It is an enamel I would guess. would the sand blasting get that off too?

Also if so, would I need to put some sort of enamel back on it and where/how do i do that? I would assume the enamel is necessary otherwise it would not be there in the first place..

Hi Wendy ,
Yes , the sand-blasting will remove all paint and the enamel .
I;m not sure about how to apply another coating of enamel . Maybe , taking it to a ceramic shop and ask if they could apply some permanent surface by placing it in a kiln ?
=)

P.S. Take care that the sand blasting does not perforate the metal - it may be too thin .
