Forget about traditional mattresses and go with the Tempur-pedic. It is expensive but it is a worthwhile investment. I wouldn't recommend being enticed by the cheaper imitations because most of them hold a lot of excess heat, so if you sweat in your sleep, they're a big mistake. Not only is Tempur-pedic comfortable, it's more stable (remember the commercials with the jumping on the mattress with the undisturbed glass of red wine? It's really like that), durable, and should come with a really good warranty.
One of the most comfortable mattreses is Bergad / Isoform. It is rated as one of the most comfy ones and can be purchased at the Macy's. Others include Comfortaire and Ait Mattress. Get more suggestions on http://www.consumersearch.com/mattress-reviews.
Hastens (with two dots over the a) They are hand made, use natural fibers, and are among the most expensive in the world. Another more budget friendly option would be the Tempur-Pedic CLOUD, but it is still expensive. Sears offers a product called I Cloud which is very competitive and hovers on the fringes of affordability.

Most all mattresses are heavily sprayed with toxic fire retardants. I read somewhere it can be over 20% of its weight. These chemicals we are learning are not good plus they off-gas. The state of California is considering easing the rules here on its requirements for fire retardants. Throw some blankets on a wood floor instead.
