put diamteaus earth around it. It is a chemical used to clean swimming pools. It is a powder that looks like lime. my husband put it around the wood where we had the cup hook to hang the feeder and the ants would not cross it.

I've fed hummers for probably 20 years now. I always spray the 6 hole feeding areas with something called 'Skin So Soft'. It most always keeps ants and bees away and doesn't bother the birds (Hummers or Orioles). The bummer is that I can only find it from an Avon lady! It's been worth it though. I got a big bottle years ago and am still using it. Good luck with whatever you try. And PS don't color your nectar, just plain sugar water is best.
The Ant Moat is a small plastic cup (about 3" in diameter) that fits between the hummingbird feeder and your hanger. Just fill it with water or petroleum jelly and ants can't get to the feeder! (Works with all feeders.)
Go to the store and buy some chalk. White seems to work better. Then draw a complete circle around the opening and any where they might be able to crawl on. The pole and any other place that looks good. Also use this for ants that are coming into your house. Windows Doors, and garages.
