What are the effects of nitrous acid on your DNA ?

I know that when sodium nitrate is consumed, it converts to nitrous acid in your stomach which can mutate or alter your DNA...but what do those mutations mean ? Can you contract a disease, become deformed, or if someone who had mutated DNA had children, would their children have health issues ? Basically, what happens to you when your DNA is mutated from nitrous acid ? lol thanks !

Mutations of DNA caused by nitrous acid replicate samples of dAT copolymer. This type of synthetic DNA then causes double helix like natural DNA's but contains only one adenine of the 3 bases of DNA. This causes permanent change in DNA sequence of a gene. Get more details from http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022283664802102.
