Can your employer deny you a cigarette break?
I work 6 hour shifts at an esso in Ontario Canada I receive no payed or unpayed breaks. My employer said if I smoke on shift I will be fired. Seeing as how it has never interfered with my duties or excellent customer service I don't see it as fair. I was recently told that because smoking is classified as an addiction my boss cannot deny me a cigarette. I also believe my boss has to give me a paid 5 or 10 minute break every five hours of work. Can my boss legally fire me for taking a five minute cigarette break if it does not interfere with my duties as an employee?
