that term refers to people of the deemocratic party. but really any one including a republican can be a liberal. typically the liberal votes for politicians who support gay marriage, equal pay, protect the environment, support the lowest levels of socioeconomic people (poor people) to become middle class. they typically bump heads with industry and Ceo and religious people looking to impose thier belief system on every one else.

Liberals are people who support the peaceful change of government and society to more egalitarian and free, specifically support freedom of speech, democracy, civil rights, free trade, freedom of the press, private property. Classic liberalism seeks to reduce the involvement of government in the economy, and letting market forces manage the economy, following the ideas of Adam Smith. In the US there is a simplistic tendency of opposers of the Democratic Party to equate liberalism with socialism. Nothing is farther from the truth. In fact, much of the Republican platform agrees with classic liberalism! My own perception is that generally the republicans are liberals, and democrats are socialists.
