are you sure? as part of the coranation of Pope, they have 2 sit on a throne without seat and prove their manhood bc of at least 1 pope rumored 2 be a woman....
Report as
Look up, Pope Joan from 855 A.D. crowned Pope John. on throne for 2 1/2 years untill discovered a woman...
Report as
Pope Joan is an absolute myth. Cj, if bother to look up pope Joan in 855 then all you will get is a lot of sources claiming her a fictitious character. Besides, pope Benedict lll was pope in 855.

Thetrustylepp, what band is that in your profile pic?

Mike, pope Benedict lll was pope from 855 to 858 and his reign is documented. The story of joan didn't appear till much later after her alleged reign. Joan is pure myth with no real evidence supporting her existence

Marcus, the picture is of a sister folk duo named First Aid Kit. I took it in October when I saw them in Hollywood. They are one of the few modern groups that I really like. I am absolutely in love with them!

Oh okay. They look a lot like my sister-in-law's friend's band.

Good answer, TTL! I know its more Catholic (Non-Chatholic) urban ledgend than true documented history. I looked it up after i asked the question. Honestly, I kinda knew the answer b4 I asked the question. Not the whole answer but, I remembered hearing the story somewhere. Johanna wasnt writen about untill many years after she died, if she was a real person in the 1st place. Besides, back then, there was often more than 1 pope at a time. There was a child Pope as well... Heck, the Holy See's seat was in France and other places, palaces/ fortresses besides Rome, where the diffrent Popes could hide behind walls from assissian and call each other names like heretic and usurper...check in2 it. In the end, Idk if it can ever be proved weather Joans story was a "Go" or a "No" one ting tat puzzles me is, why do all Popes avoid the crossing/road where Joan was runored 2 die if the story doesnt have something 2 it...? eirther way, I'll lean 2wards the "No" myself but, it did make intresting research and topic 4 debate from accouple of people though, aye?

Oh ha I thought you were serious. I read all about this 3 years ago but I actually had to research it a little again to refresh my memory. Common knowledge will immediately tell anyone that Catholics would never elect a woman to be pope. Especially not back then. I'm not sure about them not crossing the road where she allegedly died. I've never heard about that but they are certainly the superstitious type so maybe that's why they might be a little against it. This was a good knowledge refreshment though!

A woman would not be allowed to be the pope.

There has never been a legitimate, female Pope.
All seminarians, deacons, priests, Bishops, and Popes, in the Roman Catholic Christian Church, must be males.
I hope this helps to fully answer your question.

Fratello Frank, Im Roman Catholic myself. I know the Pope Joan's story is not clear 2 scolars. Did she really happened or was it just an urban ledgend? I vaguely remembered hearing the story of a female pope so, I did look it up after posted. I just wanted 2 see what kind of answers would come up from the ask.com comunity on a question like that... Its just history question, or mis-history question, that Im sure, some people looked into 2 find out what really happened. Im sorry if I've offended you in any way Frank. I read your bio... If any1 knows the answers here, it looks like you may be on the top of that list. Founa Fortuna

The Catholics have never allowed female priests, therefore there have been zero female Popes.

And through out history, men have never been able 2 pass themselves off as woman or woman as men? Think about it, who would see a pious priest naked? Would the priest even be expected 2 get naked 4 anything? They hardly even took baths back in the day...
Report as
No accounting for that. It would be a hoot to find out that actually happened.

Pope Joan. A German chic raised as a boy in a English run monestary in Germany. when she grew up enough, she ran of w/her bf/lover 2 Greece then Rome where she got job as secretary 2 a Bishop... Was crowned Pope John 855A.D. spent 2 1/2yrs on throne untill discovered a woman...what happens next is unclear except 4 the fact she dies that day...
Report as
Holy smokes. There is a tidbit of history I haven't heard yet. Ok, that is officially a hoot.
Report as
Bigger hoot. The legend (it is unconfirmed, of course) says this Pope actually gave birth. And naturally, was immediately killed; talk about a fall from grace.
Report as
It is a far fall from grace! Did you read about the kid (son) growing up and later becoming the Bishop of Ostia? who knows. The'll always be some1 2 debunk history on both ends... I think its intresting. I find new things in history all the time that make me wonder what really happened...? So, Im going 2 start asking everybody on this site what they know/think about my posts... hope 2 see your answers there. Bouna Fortuna

Pope Joan was a legendary female Pope who allegedly reigned for a few years some time during the Middle Ages. The story first appeared in 13th-century chronicles, and was subsequently spread and embellished throughout Europe. It was widely believed for centuries, though modern religious scholars consider it fictitious, perhaps deriving from historicised folklore regarding Roman monuments or from anti-papal satire. Joan of Arc was quite an intresting figure in history... she told the King (pre-king) that God sent her 2 him. That God spoke 2 her and told her 2 beat the English out of France. She did lead the French 2 some unexpcted victories but, was betrayed and captured by the English and supsuquently budner at the stake. The Catholic Church Canonized her centeries later. As far as I know, she was made a saint but was never a Pope...? If u want 2 see Hollywoods version, Check out the movie "The Messenger"

I have wondered if any women were clever enough to fool everyone into believing that she was a he. Wouldn't be that hard with the robes they all wear. I don't think we'll ever know the true answer to this question. The person who answered with no legitimate female popes.

FunnyLittleFrog

A woman isn't allowed to be a priest, so she can't climb the ladder to become Pope. There was a legend about "Pope Joan" though. There's a book about her by Lawrence Durrell.
