Be yourself.
Most importantly, BE CONFIDENT.
Don't worry about the people around you, just take care of yourself.

Just casually make jokes and become friends with the group

Well, just start spending time around them, talk to them, make jokes, be friendly. If you're in middle school, high school, or college, you most likely have some classes without them. Talk to other people in those classes and start hanging out with them. Without anyone else to talk to, it'll seem completely natural. In fifth grade, I myself had a bad friend. I stopped hanging out with her and ended up sitting alone at the lunch table. I was like that for a day or two before another group of girls walked right over to where I was sitting and plopped down. I went to move, thinking they'd want me to, but they told me to stay. They quickly became friends. They're still friends of mine today, even if I've moved on to a different group. You could do the same thing I did and get away from the influence as fast as possible. A group of nice people will see you, and they'll sit with you and become your friends. :)
