What's a good Star Trek movie to start with?

I've never watched Star Trek before, but lately I've been hearing a lot of good things about it. The problem is I have no idea what the order is, so which one do I start with?

In order of release:
1) Star Trek - The Motion Picture
2) The Wrath of Khan
3) The Search for Spock
4) The Voyage Home
5) The Final Frontier
6) The Undiscovered Country

Remember the rule: Even-numbered Trek movies don't suck.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It was the first.

Haha you'd think that'd be pretty obvious!

It isn't to people who aren't old enough to remember that one. The franchise as a movie kinda died out after that until it was revived some years later.

Start with the old tv shows...if you just go straight for the movies, you will not get a lot of what they are talking about.

The reboot directed by J.J. Abrams, forget about the old ones, they're junk. It's only Star WARS that you have to worry about which order to watch them in.

Of the Classic Series Movies, Wrath of Khan will be entertaining (keeping in mind the Khan storyline is a continuation of a TV episode).

Of the Next Generation series movies, I enjoy First Contact the most (again keeping in mind there is some carry-over from the TV show).

I'm a Trekkie. I followed The Original Series (TOS) but was not to familiar with the movies. The Next Generation (TNG) is where I began to watch the movies and then I went back and watched TOS movies. From TNG, First Contact is a real good Star Trek movie because it gives history and background on why things are such in the whole Star Trek sagas. The 2009 movie is excellent and not your normal Star Trek movie, but it sticks with saga. Thus, beginners should start with the 2009 production and then watch First Contact.

The Star Trek Next Generation (TNG) movies (First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis) are all pretty self explanatory. Which movies to start with entirely depends on your purpose for watching in the first place. If you're looking for fun sci-fi shoot-em-up with hard to understand plots and worse special effects, watch the original series' movies in order as listed in the first answer. If you're looking for thought provoking, well written social commentary, then the TNG movies are for you and should be watched in order. If you're looking for a fun movie and to understand what all the hype is about, go with the one from 2009. Keep in mind that the one from 2009 is an alternate timeline from the original series, though it has mostly the same characters, so if you want background for the one coming out then, again, the one from 2009 is for you. I hope this helps.
