I would like to train my cat to use a litter tray indoors instead of my neighbour's garden. Any tips please?

My kitten already has one so the cat should know what it's for. Can I just not let it out until it has used it?

Whatever you do, please don't let your cat outside to go, wander, run loose. It will only end up injured, diseased or just disappear. Try to keep it inside as much as possible. Once you do it will use the litter box. But it must be kept spotless. Cats don't like to share dirty litter boxes with each other. It might be best to have two boxes, to be on the safe side. Otherwise you might find "accidents" around the house.

The cat will still use the garden even after learning to use the litter box. It is part of scent marking territory.

Get a cat litter box that's a bit bigger than you think your cat needs. Cats like it roomy. Use a PLAIN clay litter, avoid the scented kids and stay away from the clumping kind. Put the litter box somewhere that gives your cat privacy. Go to your neighbor's garden and find one of your cat's poops and put it in the litter box so your cat will recognize his/her smell.

But even if you do everything right, if you let your cat outside he/she will ALWAYS save a little for the garden. That's how cats say "this is mine" to other cats.

If possible, put the cat in a small room with the litter box, so that the litter box is the only digg-able, absorbent spot where it can pee. However, when the cat has access to the outside again, he's going to figure the neighbor's garden is up the "grabs" again.

Hate to say it but if he has already used the neighbors garden it will be close to impossible if not impossible to liter train only. Miracles happen everyday though. Good Luck;)

Put the kitty in the litter box. Hold its
front legs and do a digging motion back and forth. Your kitten will get the hang of it. This is how I litter trained all my kittens.

If you let your cat outside, it will go wherever it wants to. Litter box training is not really something you need to do. They know instinctively to use it. Also, the cat is marking territory when it goes outside. Not something they do if they are an indoor cat.

The only way to keep your cat only using the litter box it to keep it indoors at all times. Cats do live longer, healthier, and safer lives if they do not go outside.

An outdoor cat will be lucky to live 12-15 years while an indoor cat can life to about 18-20 years depending on the breed. I have a harness & leach set to take my cats outside occasionally. They like to rub around on the grass and smell things.

What they all said. One more suggestion. Go to your neighbor's garden and scoop up a cup of the dirt. Put the new, large, clay-filled litter box in the bath tub. Sprinkle the garden soil over the top of the clay litter. Take your cat in the bathroom and put it in the litter box. It should get the idea very quickly. Why in the tub? There is something about the shower or tub drain odor that attracts them. Good luck!
